Hiking 101

Some required and recommended gear & supplies to bring with you on any hike you embark on.

Required:

WATER! We believe 3 liters of water is a good amount for most hikes. Remember during hot summer months to bring more.

Recommended:

  • Appropriate hiking shoes: These can be trail running shoes, light hiking shoes, or hiking boots. If this is your first hiking with PHP, wear any athletic shoes that you have and discuss with a hike leader what your options are for shoes.

  • Layers: Depending on the season thin or thick layers may be helpful. Base layer, insulation layer, outer wind and water protection layer. For outdoor use, synthetic and wool material are the best. Always avoid cotton. Our official PHP shirt can be purchased at Run With Us in Pasadena.

  • Hiking or trekking poles: These can help bring more blood flow to your hands especially on long hikes. They also help with stability on the downhills. There's no rule about what brand to purchase, but remember you get what you pay for, we prefer Leki and Black Diamond.

  • Sun protection: Hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.

  • Snack and lunch

  • First-aid kit

  • Backpack to carry all your gear and supplies.

For more info, we recommend checking out the oudoors 10 Essentials list by REI.

Suggested places to purchase gear: Patagonia, REI, Adventure 16, and Sport Chalet.

When embarking on any trip outdoors, always be prepared for situations that are unplanned that can be potentially dangerous and involve a lengthier time to resolve. Bring more than you might need.
